Abstract

Objective : The purpose of this study was to assess the home postpartum care in urban area in Korea.

Methods : Two hundred fifty seven women who had given a birth at one of four major general hospitals in Busan metropolitan city between 6 weeks to a year before the time of interview for this study were interviewed from June 1 to September 30, 2001. The interview instrument was developed for this study based on Park Hyoung Sook¢¥ s postpartum accomplishment tool. Forty items of questionnaire were composed of four different sections; hospitality, physical and emotional recovery, caring and maternal role attainment. Maximum 4.0 score Likert scale was applied. The higher the score, the better postpartum care.

Results : Average duration of postpartum care was 4.2¡¾1.9 weeks after delivery. The proportion of women who used primarily the postpartum care center was 23.7% and 60.3% of primary care takers were their own mothers. In postpartum period 30.4% of the women experienced generalized arthralgia, change of body shape, and fatigue. To attain physical fitness during the postpartum period 42.8% of the women performed stretching exercise but 74.3% had never been involved in any physical exercise during the pregnancy. However, 89.7% of them were actively involved in household work. The item "duration of postpartum care should be at least 8 week" received the lowest score out of 40 items while "immunization of baby" received the highest score. The four sections of the categories were ranked in the order of maternal role attainment (3.52¡¾0.42), hospitality (3.06¡¾0.57), caring (3.05¡¾0.43), and physical and emotional recovery (3.02 ¡¾ 0.56). When the highest possible total points was 160, average score of the study group was 124.56¡¾16.16, which was equivalent to 3.11¡¾0.40 on 4 point scale.

Conclusion : Maternal role attainment achieved the highest score among the four sections of the postpartum care. Physical and emotional recovery was ranked lowest. These results suggest that puerperal women devote more efforts to caring the maternal role attainment than caring their own recovery.
